Monastery “Pema Choling Drugpa” in Mugu/Nepal

The monastery Pema Choling Drugpa and Pema Choling in the Historical Parish Courtyard of Dewitz are spiritual “siblings”…

The monastery Pema Choling Drugpa was founded in the 1960s by Lama Gangri Tenzin Rinpoche. Lama Gangri Tenzin Rinpoche was the lineage holder of a spiritual family lineage within the Dudjom Tersar tradition of Tibetan Buddhist Nyingma.

Nyingma (Tibetan: “ancient”) is the oldest of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Its roots reach back to the 8th century CE, when the Indian master Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) came to Tibet at the invitation of the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen to teach Buddhism.

Through Padmasambhava’s translations of Buddhist texts into Tibetan, and his teachings on the Buddha’s Dharma as well as tantric practices, Buddhism was able to establish itself in Tibet.

Nyingma is the direct lineage of Padmasambhava. The knowledge of this tradition was transmitted over centuries within family lineages.

Norbu Tsering Rinpoche, the spiritual founder and teacher of Pema Choling in the Historical Parish Courtyard of Dewitz, descends from one of these ancient Nyingma family lineages. As is customary in the Nyingma tradition, Norbu Tsering Rinpoche received a thorough training during his childhood and youth under the guidance of his father.

Thereafter, beginning at the age of twenty, Norbu Tsering Rinpoche studied at the Nyingma monastic university Samye Jedren Shedra in Nepal. During his nine years of study, he received an excellent academic education in Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan Buddhist healing, and Tibetan Buddhist meditation practices, rituals, and sacred activities.

After the death of his father, Norbu Tsering Rinpoche became the head of his spiritual family tradition.

His heritage also includes the monastery Pema Choling Drugpa in Mugu Province, Nepal, founded by his father.

The district of Mugu lies in western Nepal at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is one of the most remote and least populated districts of the country.

Mugu is home to the largest lake in Nepal—Lake Rara—situated at an altitude of 2,900 meters, in the middle of the Lake Rara National Park.

In the future, Pema Choling in the Historical Parish Courtyard of Dewitz intends to offer excursions to Mugu and to Pema Choling Drugpa in Nepal.

Furthermore, advanced practitioners will have the opportunity to undertake three-, six-, and nine-month solitary retreats at Pema Choling Drugpa, under the guidance and care of Norbu Tsering Rinpoche.
